RFID Book/Media Tracking and RFID Library Management System

Libraries, universities, schools, legislative governments and other entities maintain a repository of books, media and assets that are ‘loaned’ to recipients for a defined duration of time.

Libraries utilize sophisticated shelving and book identification systems, but invariably books will from time to time be placed in the wrong location within the library.  Further, library patrons my haphazardly replace books to incorrect locations.

It is often said that in libraries, that a ‘misplaced book’ is a ‘lost book’.  RFID technology includes portable scanners with a detection range up to 20’, enabling misplaced or ‘missing’ books to be rapidly located.  The portable scanner utilized sound and numeric index, similar to a metal detectors, to guide the User to within a few inches of the needed book.

If books are labeled with book identification text fields, or even bar codes, the time required to inventory the library is so time consuming, that typically inventories are performed infrequently.  Again emphasizing the value of being able to find books with long range radio waves.  Additionally, inventories are dramatically faster with RFID versus manual or bar code inventories, improving book, media and asset accountability through more frequent inventories.

RFID portals can be placed at library exits to detect books, media or assets that have not been properly checked-out, which triggers flashing lights and alarm.

Patron library cards can include RFID and/or bar codes for self-check out of bar coded or RFID-labeled books.  RFID library cards also enable people to be identified as they exit the library, for automated check-out at exits and/or to sound alarm if patron has overdue fees.

SmartTraxx Book Tracking System integrates with library information systems, to keep book location data updated in the library’s core book management system.
